Are Office Chair Wheels Universal? A Simple Guide to Stem Size & Fit
Share
One of the most common questions we get at HAZE is simple: "Will these wheels fit my chair?"
It’s a valid fear. There is nothing more frustrating than ordering an upgrade for your office setup, only to find out the parts don't snap together.
The short answer is: Yes, office chair wheels are almost entirely universal.
The long answer involves one major Swedish exception. Here is everything you need to know about stem sizes, measurements, and compatibility before you buy.
The "Gold Standard": The 11mm Stem
95% of all office chairs sold in the world use the exact same mounting system. It’s called a "Grip Ring Stem," and the standard measurement is 11mm x 22mm.
Whether you have a $1,500 Herman Miller Aeron, a Steelcase Leap, a Secretlab gaming chair, or a generic mesh chair from Staples, they all likely use this 11mm standard.
If your chair is from any of these brands, HAZE wheels will fit perfectly:
-
Herman Miller
-
Steelcase
-
Humanscale
-
Secretlab / DXRacer / Noblechairs
-
Staples / Office Depot / Amazon Basics
-

The "Swedish Exception": IKEA (10mm) HAZE will NOT fit!
There is one major outlier in the furniture world. IKEA office chairs.
IKEA uses a slightly smaller stem that is 10mm wide (instead of 11mm). It is just different enough that a standard universal wheel won't fit—it will be too loose or won't snap in at all.
-
The Rule of Thumb: If you bought your chair at IKEA (models like the Markus, Järvfjället, or Renberget), standard universal wheels will not fit. You need specific 10mm stem wheels.
-
The Solution: If you don't have an IKEA chair, you are safe in the 99% zone.
The "Pen Test": How to Double Check
If you lost your chair's manual or bought it second-hand and aren't sure if it's "standard," you can check in 30 seconds without a ruler.
-
Pop out one of your old wheels. (Just pull firmly; it should slide right out).
-
Grab a standard Bic pen.
-
Compare: The stem of a standard 11mm wheel is almost exactly the same width as a common ballpoint pen.
-
If the stem looks roughly the same width as the pen, it’s Standard (11mm). You are good to go!
-
If the stem looks significantly thinner than the pen, it might be an IKEA (10mm) or antique specialty stem.
-
How to Install Your New HAZE Wheels
Once you know they fit, installation is tool-free and takes about 2 minutes.
-
Flip your chair over.
-
Pull the old wheels straight out (use a rag for grip if they are greasy/stuck).
-
Push the new HAZE stem into the socket until you hear a satisfying click.
-
Flip it back over and enjoy the glide.
Ready to upgrade? If you aren't sitting on an IKEA chair, you are ready for the upgrade. Ditch the plastic and switch to the silent, smooth glide of HAZE.
